Thai "dialects" Peace Corps textbooks | ||

Hi.
Does anyone have access or knows where can I get any of the Thai "dialects" textbooks by Peace Corps, namely: - Northeastern Dialect Lessons - Chotima Jungsawat, Wannamart Thongtham, Supaporn Boonraksasataya, Thongchai Chutasilp - Northern Dialect Lessons - Sunirun Bonsooth, Tuanchai Chaimongkol, Supaporn Boonraksasataya, Thongchai Chutasilp - Southern Dialect Lessons - Monthai Thipbummng, Rujinart Thokaew, Supaporn Boonsaksasataya, Thongchai Chutasilp They aren't even catalogued at ERIC. There are, however, the dictionaries for all three (Isaan/Lao, Lanna and Dambro) can be found there. Keep asking, they are slow to respond. Someone on this forum served in Thailand...I'll try to dig them up for you.

Muito obrigado, FutureSpy! Because of your question, I found a Peace Corps course for Tetum, a Portuguese influenced language of East Timor. Looks like fun, and it shouldn't be too difficult for a Portuguese speaker to get to a basic level in a couple of months.
I know it is not what you've asked for but I also found a zip file of US Peace Corps Thai multimedia lessons here Peace Corps Thai Download The online version with 13 lessons is here Peace Corps Multimedia Thai Lessons seems to be basic level. This link also has Russian, French (Mali), Arabic (Jordan), Mandarin, Bambara (Mali), and Ukranian for those who may be interested- they're free. I searched the US Government Printing Office website, but since I don't know the exact title of the publications, I was unable to locate them. You might try googling the US Government Printing Office and search there. Whilst doing a g-search here, I found a link to a site called Women Learn Thai that seems to have many Thai resources available. Boa sorte! @iguanamon: De nada! Great you were able to find these materials. I'm not sure where you got them from, but I assume it was from here. These materials are great, and I've been using them as well. They've been online for a few years already, and like 2 months ago they uploaded the 2nd edition and some audio files to go with the first lessons, and also the complete PDF for Tetum for Justice Sector (it was just Part 1 before), which is also do great as an intermediate course (although some might find it not very useful). Here's a mention of a Peaec Corps textbook on the Northern Thai Dialect (4th message down).
And here is a listing of language books available in the Peace Corps IRC library in Thailand. This would probably be the people to email to see if they have any online copies. I also did a quick google searcha and found some links that might be helpful. A short overview of some of the Thai dialects. Thanks unzum. Actually, I already knew most references you quoted.
Another thread now mentioning the Isaan book by PC. It's also listed on LibraryThing. I've already mailed the ICT group at PC Thailand, but they told me they were nothing but a "bridge" between US PC, volunteers in Thailand and interested volunteers. I'm still trying to get PC Thailand contact info... For Isaan there's indeed a considerable amount of material. Poomsan's Speak Like a Thai Vol. 5 is great. I have it, it's actually a phrasebook and some random sentences aside, the recordings are great and they have every sentence in both Thai and Isaan. As for "Thai - Isan - Lao Phrasebook", I got it but it's at my parents' and I still didn't get a chance to see it. It's worth mentioning that there's also a real Isaan textbook in two volumes and CDs: Speak Isaan Thai. Other than that, there's a fair number of books for Lao, which can also be useful for Isaan in case you can't get anything else or as a complement. As for "超基礎タイ語単語５４０+チェンマイ語 イサーン語 南タイ語", なかなかいいもの紹介してくれましたね、unz um さん。 I don't know if all sentences are also in Lanna/Kam muang, Isaan and Dambro, but you can see an ads and some sample pages here (Amazon only had the table of contents). Another sample page not linked on that website. I wish the guy would talk more about the book instead of all the "other editors don't have that" chitchat... And for Lanna, I found another Japanese book. It was published once as "すぐにはなせるチェンマイ語" by 国際語学社, and then as "すぐにはなせるチェンマイ語会話" by ジェーシーシー出版. Unfortunately, both editions are out of print, and used copies aren't that cheap. Include tapes. There's also a reader with CDs by Dunwoody Press, but it requires Thai knowledge for using it.
