Hi everyone,
I'm planning to head over to live in Montpellier in France for 3 months at the start of next year and then travel through West Africa for another 3-6 months. I studied French throughout high school and was at a high-intermediate level then but unfortunately haven't done any further language practice for the last 5 years - thus my French is quite rusty!
I am a native English speaker and also speak Spanish at an intermediate level (spent 6 months living in Quito, Ecuador and studied intensively there 2 years ago) so they should help me pick up more French.
I would love to hear any recommendations for good textbooks to purchase to further my French. I will hopefully be living with a local French family there and would like to do the minimum amount of french lessons there (due to the cost) and am happy to do a lot of self-directed study.
Any suggestions?

With French there is so much you can get your hands on, it's difficult to know where to start. It also depends on how you like to learn. Are you comfortable with grammar-based learning?
I like:
Living Language Ultimate
Linguaphone (pricey!)
The old BBC series of 'A Vous La France', 'France Extra' and 'Franc Parler'
Hugo's French package
There is also a fair amount of free stuff available online, for example http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french/ and the FSI courses, which also have modules in African varieties of French. http://fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php?page=French

I don't know if you're advanced enough for this, but this is a book featuring a LOT of exercises (drill-like) on pretty
much every thing in the french language. The whole thing is in french and made for french speakers (not foreigners)
but if you're ever at an advanced level and want to go further, I think it could be good for you.
