Sorry, but I feel that "la clase es duro" sounds weird. Can you really use duro here?? I
thought you had to translate it as "dificil". I know that would be difficult, but "duro"
sounds really wrong to me...

Of course, because it would be "dura", not "duro".

It's not. It's just a tad different from simply "difícil"; "difícil" would mean "hard to understand", "dura" would imply "hard to undergo" for whatever reasons (maybe just a flowery way to say "hard to understand").

I agree with you. I'm a native Spanish speaker, and I would never say "la clase es dura". As I mentioned previously, I could say "el temario es duro" but never "la clase es dura"...it sounds as if the classroom was made of stone or something like that.
