I don't tell people when I'm learning something new or have a goal. It actually does help
for me. Talk is cheap. I prefer people to suddenly be surprised that I actually KNOW a
language. In fact, it's actually like a fun secret.

Exactly.
Studying a language is like exercising.
It's great that you go the gym, but people are inspired by six packs and biceps, not membership cards and sweatpants.

Say 20 Hail Marys and Our Fathers in Polish and study 9 hours next week, and you will be forgiven. |

Will this work even if I don't study Polish?!?

It works BECAUSE you don't study Polish.

I agree, but for a different reason.
Telling a person my goal actually puts more pressure on me. I don't get stuff done by talking, I get stuff done by
thinking. Plus, it's a lot less stressful if I just put my nose to the grindstone and not ruminate.
I agree with the idea of it being a secret. It's one of those things I might pull out of my hat one day and it will be a
lovely surprise! I prefer not to brag about what I am trying to accomplish. If anybody asks, I say that I am 'studying',
not that I 'know' it.
But the weird thing is, I like talking about my dreams, but not about my goals. Maybe it's because dreams are at a
'safer' distance.

From somewaht less reliable sources, I've heard that you can tell people and it would assist you by using social pressure. You won't want to let people down and so it will be one more motivator, and I sure don't get any praise for saying I'm going to do something. Perhaps, it's because my tougher goals are mostly physical since I am better motivated in my academic goals that this should work, since we look differently at physical skills (this is a lot more pride involved) than brain skills.
