I'm giving up with the new Assimil Arabic method. The audio part is talked so slow I can't repeat it, it's very unatural. I do not recommend it, contrary to usual Assimil programs.
I'll have to resort to Pimsleur Eastern Arabic 2 (level 3 should come next year they said) but that won't lead me as far as i would like. ANd I'm still to find a way to get it cheap !
EDIT. Look up my on December 29th 2008 post.
Sorry, I'm changing my mind.

I haven't listened to it, but I would imagine they would speed up after a certain point right?

Nooo ! I realised they don't or so little. I hear a lot of arabic and they speak a different language, given the speed.

Couldn't you just speed it up with some software to get the speed you want? Don't some programs do it with without changing the pitch?

By the way, what is the teaching language? I think the French and English versions are different so you might want to try the other one.

Interestingly NPR (American public broadcasting radio) did a story on Assimil
a few years ago, greatly praising the method but generally indicating that
the Arabic course is to be avoided. If you're curious, you can see the story
at
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5021582
I believe someone here (I think Ardaschir but I'm not positive) indicated that
the Linguaphone Arabic course is much better (and uses a similar method).
It may be worth looking into.

I'm pretty sure zorglub refers to the new "Assimil - L'Arabe".
And I have listened to the audio and it is really unnaturally slow (and this also includes the last lessons).
But I'm curious whether there were any additional reasons for you to drop the course apart from the speed of the dialogues, zorglub.

Yes it's the new one and its English adaptation is still pending. The other reason is the voices are awful and they start with the very classic arabic endings that are not used nowadays, then switch to a more contemporary "standard" Arabic. And it looks quite grammary oriented, not "Assimil".

I also had been told the previous version was a little bit of a "hairshirt way" , but I'll look at the story.
