Hi - just wondering if anyone is learning Nepali. What sources have you found useful? Do you have any good websites or tools to recommend? Thanks!

Namasté!
There's an excellent introduction to Nepali available online, a 250 page pdf, it's on
http://www.digitalhimalaya.com/projectteam/turin/downloads/n epali_primer.pdf

The catch is that you have to learn the devanagri syllabary!... but don't let it scare you, it's these 50-something syllables, and once you've learned them, you've opened up a treasure trove, you know how to read and write also!

I don't have any resources, but I'm very curious as to why you'd like to study Nepali -
not that I'm criticizing! It's a very rarely studied language, and as I was recently (and
basically still am as I have doubts about what I've decided on) going through the process
of picking a new language, I'd like to make sure I'm not ignoring a very interesting one.

I'm not just learning Nepali as some academic exercise, but because, well, the way my life has turned out, Nepali is now quite useful to me! I have a lot of Nepali speaking friends and acquaintances. Some of them are very old and will never learn another language. I love being able to speak with them!

Another thing is a project that I have in mind, documenting life in the Himalayas. Nepali will be quite helpfull for that purpose, although not mandatory. It will be some years before I'll be able to start such a big project, so in the mean time I'm doing what I can to learn Nepali :)

Objectively speaking, there's probably not many good reasons to learn Nepali, as compared to Chinese, Japanese, Hindi etc... But you know, it's also kind of an attraction! A bit exotic!

Greendog, I think whenever you pick a language to learn, you're always 'ignoring' a hundred other interesting languages... :)

There seems to be some accompanying audio for the primer here.

I once did a couple of hours of L-R in Nepali just for fun (I don't have any plans to study it in the future   :).

You can find an audiobook of the Nepali New Testament here:
