I spent a few years in Nepal and West Bengal/Sikkim where Nepali is widely spoken and/or understood. The best place to pick up Nepali study books and countless other titles in Nepali would be -of course- Kathmandu, especially Pilgrims Bookstore in Thamel, who run their own publishing business as well and ship their stuff worldwide.
I personally worked my way through "Teach yourself Nepali" (among others) and the accompanying audio tapes but nothing has helped me more than my Nepali friends and families.
Please be aware that the Nepali spoken in the eastern parts of Nepal and beyond differs quite a bit from the dialects spoken in KTM and western districts. You could try to grab a copy of G.G. Rogers "Colloquial Nepali" (eastern Nepali) to get the idea. In most parts of the country Nepali is still no more than a lingua franca and many locals prefer their own language of which there are more than 80.

Anyway, good luck and "Nepali ho" !

Difference is there but that's only accent and vocabulary difference, nothing much.
