"State-sponsored" language courses? | ||

Just curious if anyone had come across a courses from governments that teach the national
language of its country. For example CCTV-4 from China's website is packed with video courses ranging from beginner to advanced. Some of the courses look quite good rivaling French in Action. TRT (Turkey) has a podcast series on its website that has translated into several languages. Anyone have any luck finding any good resources? YLE's Supisuomea course and its quasi-pedagogical radio program Selkouutiset (news broadcasts presented in relatively simple Finnish with comprehension exercises so that foreigners/immigrants can understand yet learn too) would fit the bill as YLE is Finland's national broadcaster and owned 99.98% by the Finnish government.
Deutsche Welle's courses for German may qualify but I can't get a straight answer on whether the German government ultimately owns/sponsors Deutsche Welle via ARD or some other organization. Norway's Folkeuniversitetet may also count as it offers courses in Norwegian (in addition to other languages such as Arabic, English, Northern Saami, Spanish). From what I gather Folkeuniversitetet is an adult education association that receives funding from national and municipal governments. P.S. I didn't notice earlier that YLE puts out more than just courses in Finnish. There are also some audio-, text- or video-based materials for Arabic, Chinese, Estonian, Finnish Sign Language, French, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish which are intended for people knowing Finnish. There are plenty of sources on Deutsche Welle website. Also BBC had loads of programmes, mostly about vocabulary. The second ones were not strictly courses, but I enjoyed them a lot. Edited by prz_ on 20 August 2011 at 12:03am 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I have courses from Radio Nederlands, Dutch by Radio, from Russia, Russian by Radio and Russian For Everybody and from Sweden, Swedish by Radio.
The programs from Russia and Holland were free. Dutch by Radio came with textbooks and a record, I got books from Radio Moscow. I got a free book from Radio Sweden but I had to pay for the book and a set of 10 x 12" LPs teaching Swedish, money well spent. I did get some stuff from Radio Japan which I never used and I got a set of 20 or more floppy 7" records from Radio Australia with a book teaching Indonesian.
