All languages have evolved and retained features that make the modern language seem illogical to second language learners. If wringers "wring" why don't fingers "fing"? I once saw this quote about a Chinese man learning English "What kind of sense can you make of a language where in order to a chop a tree 'up' you first have to chop it 'down'?"
So this morning, whilst browsing reddit, I saw this You think English is easy? As native English speakers we can be thankful that we didn't have to learn it as a second language. To those fluent ESL speakers out there- wow! To those learning English as a second language- my sympathies!
Hope this makes you laugh.

Lovable examples of linguistic lunacy! I indeed feel very grateful that English is my first language. :)

Wow. I didn't know that there were two ways to pronounce "invalid".
I got everything else though.

I had to look up the first definition of "intimate". Wow, I didn't know it could be used "to communicate delicately and indirectly". And there's two ways to pronounce "invalid"? You learn something new every day.
I'm glad I began learning English at a young age. This just motivates me to help my mom with her own English that much more. ^-^

How many times do you think you've needed to use the word 'egocentric' since you learned
it?
