I would say Latin can't be very difficult for an English speaker. There are many
cognates, pronunciation can be ignored, the grammar has some similarities with English.

Let's not overestimate the similarities! There are indeed many cognates but just the fact that Latin is an ancient language means that many words have completely different semantics. See Iversen's post earlier in this thread.
Besides, in Classical Latin sentences are often constructed quite differently from English and from modern Romance languages, for example when using the passive voice, and there are some very idiomatic constructions.

There are unfamiliar constructions even in Germanic languages. There are also false
friends. But if we compare Latin with a random language, it is fairly easy.

Having studied both German and Latin I find the latter to be more challenging, but of course YMMV.
