Right now, I'm using "Phonetique en dialogues" in order to learn French pronunciation, and actually I was very happy about the book but I started to have some doubts.
The book suggests that the vowels in following words are same:
pelote, beurre, renomme, deux
Is it that true? According to my dictionaries, there're three vowels there: different vowels in "beurre" and "deux" and schwas in the other words.
According to the book, there aren't any differences between père and régale.
Is it normal in French language materials? Is it some kind of making it simple for beginners, and some differences are introduced later or not at all (as insignificant)?

The course "The Rhythm of French" explains the orthography of the French language well. Diane Dansereau explains French pronunciation in her book "Savoir Dire" - there are also recordings for use with this book. I think that the sound differences are significant, since if one mispronounces words, they may not be understood.
