Princeton lesson 8 says that сeрдцe ends with an "o" sound. My text to speech program disagrees. Which is correct,
and can you recommend a free talking dictionary online?

Your TTS program is right. There's definitely no o sound in Сердце (=heart). Check out this cheesy Russian Rap song for the proper pronunciation.

The "я" in "объяснить" is pronounced "ya" and might give you the impression that there's a short i before it, because that's what happens if you pronounce a "y" sound followed by a vowel.

Thanks D.
And does Извинитe ради Бога = Forgive me, for god's sake?

Here's what Princeton chapter 1, lesson 8, homework exercise 2, 7. and 8. say:

7. окно́ __________________________________
8. се́рдце   ____________________________ ______
(this word shares the same ending as 7)

Can someone explain what I'm not understanding here?

Correct.

I'm not familiar with the Princeton course, but both окно and сердце are neuters and therefore have the same noun declension endings.

When spoken casually and quickly, it is common for an unstressed я to sound more like an и. In careful speech though, it should still be pronounced as written.

Doitsujin and leosmith, the я in объяснить does not sound like ya because it's unstressed. It's pronounced like this.
