Can anyone recommend any good (and free) Spanish podcasts please? My reading is at about an intermediate level, but I really need to improve my listening as it is currently quite poor.
Thanks

Veinte Mundos is a great site with an archive and intermediate and advanced levels. Also don't ignore Radio Nacional de España for good native content in a variety of subjects- the BBC of the Spanish speaking world.

These are very good. Podcasts are free, but you need to pay if you want transcripts

What about versions of simplified news? The Finnish "Selkouutiset" includes a transcript to help listening comprehension. Is there a Spanish version of similar content?

Well, It's not simple but NHK Japan has native speakers reading the news in Spanish everyday with transcripts here: NHK World Spanish . They also have French and Portuguese among many other languages available. As a bonus, you can learn all about los escándalos de sumo, and la crísis nuclear en español, plus the daily drama of the yen vs the dollar!
Consider also: LibriVox They have many human read books in the public domain available for free with text. For other podcasts/audiobooks try: ivoox- you're on your own for text- seek and ye shall find.
For videos with text try here UT Austin Spanish Practice
¡Buena suerte!

My personal favourite is La Casa Rojas podcast. The presenter talks about a variety of topics to do with the Spanish language and culture; his voice is clear, the speech is naturally paced and it's perfect for students who are at intermediate level and above. The podcast is free but I think you have to pay for transcripts if you want them.
