Hi all.
I find this language most fascinating, and was wondering if anyone has taught it to themselves in a place with little chance to practice.
I don't mean those who are bilingual in Hebrew and another language, I mean those people who have learned it from scratch as a foreign language. If so, how often did you study, and how? How long did it take you? Any help would be appreciated!

Gogglehead, I had arrived at the end of a long post when I accidently hit some key that canceled everything. Right now I don't have the time to reply, but in the next few days I will post a (another!) detailed message about my Hebrew studies.

Hello,
I am in my 3rd month of learning modern hebrew.
I started of with Rosetta stone and quickly ditch it.
At present, i am basically using a list of words i compiled by part of speech, as
well as numerous ipad apps in conjucntion with lonely planet phrase book.
Learning vocabulary is not that difficult, gaining an edge on the grammatical side is a bit more demanding. However this is easily remedied by using the routledge grammar book.

I learned biblical Hebrew quite extensively and began then to learn modern Hebrew as a bonus gift. The transition is quite easy, mainly the vocabulary has grown a lot, grammar and syntax is easier nowadays. To read without Niqqud did not set a big problem.

I also started with a Biblical Hebrew background. I went through lessons 1-8 of Pimsleur Hebrew within a few weeks for introduction and pronunciation. Then I went through the book Hugo's Hebrew in Three Months, but it took me 9 months, and it was without the cassettes. I then realized that I needed to learn how to understand and speak Hebrew at a much faster pace, so I started Raizen's Modern Hebrew for Beginners (its a book + multimedia) but didn't finish it. I also started FSI Hebrew, but haven't finished it either. They are good resources, its just that I currently lack the self-discipline and consistency to acquire the harder skills. I do think that if I get through these - plus Glinert's Modern Hebrew Grammar - I might have enough of a foundation to have a decent conversation in Hebrew.
