Thanks for all the replies.

I wasn't aware of Project Gutenberg. This looks like an excellent resource. I've been considering buying a Kindle for some time now as I think it will aid me in my language learning. I didn't realise there are numerous free learning resources out there I can download.

@splog What is "Spanish for reading" like?
It is a pity that theres no "look in this book section". An Amazon review mentions
needing to spend 80 to 120 hours with the book, and that it offers around 2000 words of
new vocab. If so then that is quite substantitive, and I might well buy it!

I would say that 80 to 120 hours is about right. It probably took me around the 80 hour
figure, spread over 5 or 6 months. You are right that it teaches around 2000 words.
However, it isn't just about learning lists of words. Rather, it takes you through
well-thought-out exercises that help you learn to recognise patterns in the language.
Plus, it teaches grammar progressively. If you are not in a rush to cram everything, it
is an excellent resource to work through. Plus, having just checked the price on
Amazon, it is a bargain.

There's quite a lot of good stuff on albalearning.com, including parallel texts with
audio. Most of it is quite old, as it's all public domain, but the Spanish seems to age
less than the English, which is often, well, 'quaint':

They began to talk of distractions, offered to take me to the theater; stopped my
studies, and gave me foaming new milk to drink. Afterwards they poured cold water over
my head and back to fortify my nerves; and I noticed that my father at table or in the
morning when I went to his bedroom to bid him good morning, would gaze at me fixedly
for some little time, and would sometimes pass his hand down my spine, feeling the
vertebrae. I hypocritically lowered my eyes, resolved to die rather than confess my
crime. As soon as I was free from the affectionate solicitude of my family, I found
myself alone with my lady of the portrait.
