I have the 2008 edition. I would say its one of the best resources for Mandarin that I've seen that doesn't teach Characters. What level would it bring you to? I don't know. But if you learned the material thoroughly, I suspect you would be quite conversational. From what I've seen of Living Language material, I would say it is designed for the tourist or businessperson who needs to communicate over a wide range of topics.I have never used it because of the lack of characters, but it seems perfect for the casual learner of Mandarin who wants to focus on spoken Chinese.

While going through my old books, I found Living Language--Ultimate Mandarin Chinese, Basic-Intermediate, 2004
edition. What CEFR level (roughly, since Mandarin isn't a European language) could this program get me to?

There is nothing wrong with what the op asked here. He did not ask how far the course "will" take him, because nobody knows if he will work hard, finish the course, etc. What he asked was what level the course "could" get him to. That is a perfectly valid question, and easily answered based on judging how much the contents and level of the course correspond to CEFR levels.

It is definitely worth knowing what a course covers before studying with it. It is then, naturally, up to the learner to ensure that they achieve what the course offers.
