You are leaning towards Mandarin, the logical choice for economic reasons I feel.
However, do you plan to move to China or deal with Chinese people at home in the next 10
years in any capacity? Is China or Taiwan a place you would like to live, or would you
prefer the more developed Japan or Korea? Perhaps you should look at these issues, as
well as cultural preferences (Food, movies, music, etc) if there is no pressing business
need or if you do not know any Chinese people at this time. Just my opinion.

Well, to be fair to Taiwan, it is at about the same level as Korea. Japan, of course, is a completely different story. And depending on where you go in the PRC, things can be quite nice too. Many people say Beijing or Shanghai have largely reached 1st world levels, though I don't know how true that is, since I haven't been there myself.

It's sometimes easy to miss trivial things like facts with eyes focused so

Right Taiwan is similar to Korea. However, from looking at Seoul vs Taipei you
wouldn't know that!
From what I hear, the infrastructure is the PRC is 1st world, but the software isn't.
I.e, laws, regulations, etc. The standards for pollution, food, etc, are lower than
Korea, Japan, Taiwan. There is a reason why HK is the finance center for Asian and not
Shanghai.

Another thing, although Japan has been developed the longest, its architecture or urban
planning is not as progressive or modern as what Seoul is building, yet alone places
like Shanghai. However, that might have something to do with the state of the Japanese
economy. However, in terms of a good place to live, i think Japan and Singapore
are the best in Asia according to the usual studies. In terms of learning the language
of what looks like to be a massive economic power that will be going through massive
growing pains for years to come and a couple of small wealthy countries, Mandarin would
be the best choice and the most exciting one to learn for the future IMO. Korean would
be a good choice if you like K-pop and b/c Seoul and Busan are really booming right now
with interesting development. However, S. Korea is a small country so it is a very
limited use language and very hard to learn if you are not going to be going there or
if you don't have Korean
community links.
