Couldn't let this one pass. I love Quebec. I have been to Montreal, Quebec City and the Magdalene Islands. Quebec City is one of the most beautiful cities in North America! The Quebecois are a very friendly people, at least they were to me when I was there. Quebec is convenient for North Americans and definitely not as expensive as Europe. For anyone living within driving distance it is significantly less expensive- greater mobility and no car rental fees. Not to mention all the poutine and great maple syrup for your pancakes. Je me souviens.

I would definitely consider Quebec as a language learning destination when I decide to learn French, but not in the winter! I've been in the Caribbean too long. I think I'll go to Martinique.

Apart from the fact that most people don't speak French in Ottawa, what do you think makes Ottawa a nicer city than Québec?

simply because we've got a nice playground here in the Gatineau Park. 15 mins away from doing all sorts of outdoor activities that you can name of. That one alone beats most of the major urban centres in canada.

we have a sizeable francophone population here but you do have to make an effort to speak french since most of them are bilingual.

As far as I know, Gatineau Park is NOT in Ottawa.

Well Quebec city also has nice parks including the Plaines d'Abraham which are vast and beautiful and people here
are quite used to tourists and visitors.

I think this must be a joke. Why would want to go to Ottawa to learn Quebec French when Ottawa is not even in Quebec?

I'm not sure why we even have to debate this question. If you can afford it and your heart is set on it, then go to Europe to learn French. If you live in North America, especially close to Quebec, then it's the place to go to learn French. If for some reason, you don't like the idea of learning French in Quebec and can't afford Europe, stay home and keep listening to those tapes.

Hm let's see roads are upkept, infrastructure isn't crumbling, clean, and it's bilingual. You can live on the
Gatineau side if you want to learn your French; it's Quebec but it's Ottawa. Or you can always go to
New Brunswick!

Although I admit I am a little biased. I've lived here my whole life and being of European descent I just
don't get along with French people. And trust me if you lived in Montreal you'd know there is a huge
divide between the French (meaning French Quebecers; we just call them French) and the Europeans. I
mean, they tell their children to not eat too much at dinner because they have to make room for
dessert! What is up with that?
