I asked my teacher, but that was the evening before I got sick and I totally forgot about it. He told me that there wasn't one outstanding or authoritative author, but that it depends on the field.
You might have a look at Lothar Papula's books, maybe they're what you're looking for.

David Hilbert wrote a classic book on geometry for general audiences called Anshauliche Geometrie. It is on the
undergrad level though with very few equasions, pretty much all pictures and text.
