I have just begun studying French to hopefully get ahead when I major in it this fall. I'm using the Teach Yourself book and CDs (I know it's not very good... but it's all I have access to right now) while reading whatever I can find and listening to French radio. How long did it take some of you to begin understanding a good percentage of what you're listening to? I'm not being impatient-- I understand that language learning takes some time. I just want to know what some of your experiences were like :)

Thank you!

When I moved up to intermediate Spanish, it was a little hard understanding my Mexican friends at first. I only heard every two out of five words. But now, I'm doing a lot better after conversing so much with them. It just takes a lot of time and a LOT of listening and reading. I'd recommend looking at transcripts of French tapes while listening to them, making your eyes follow the words as you hear them so that you know how they're pronounced in a sentence.

I, myself, am studying French and I'll tell you right now: it will take a lot more time before you can understand French speakers than say, if you were to learn Spanish. Many words are slurred and even more consonants are silent.

Man am I glad I study French on my own time, because doing dictations in Spanish class was hard enough. Imagine trying to do a French dictation at beginner level. Whew!
