Hi, I would love to improve my Chinese, but one problem is that I have no idea how to, and where my level of proficiency is!

Some background info: My country has a bilingual policy, so it was compulsory that I learned Chinese (my mother tongue)from young. So technically I have learned Chinese for 12 years! But I am a passive learner that only studied for exams and didn't speak a hoot of Chinese. Somehow I scrapped through the system and now I want to improve my Chinese.

I have been told that my speaking Chinese sounds like a Caucasian beginning to speak Chinese, since I barely speak the language. And if possible I would love to have a old Beijing/old China type of accent...if that is even possible to imitate!

Reading is another challenge. The books from China are almost too tough to read and the books that I can read are like children books... Reading a martial arts novel nearly made me fall asleep since I had to skip all the pages describing scenery! Chinese music is too fast for me to catch, so there is really no way for me to immerse myself into the culture!

Can anyone recommend some books, programs or anything that can patch this gap in level? Or should I just relearn from the start? My writing has also been deteriorating since I left school..

I would foremost recommend ChinesePod. It's a good program for any level, and it'll help you narrow down where you are.
