Hello. I have been studying Portuguese for about two months now and I feel I've gotten nowhere. I've had many times where I slacked off and I feel I haven't the right material for teaching myself. (I have Pimsleur and that's pretty much the only thing I have to go by.)
I'm still lacking in:
1) a good phrasebook
2) a good grammar book
and most of all
3) inspiration
So, my question here is, can any of you recommend any good materials for teaching yourself Portuguese? (Preferably Brazilian?)
Oh and second off, do any of you have any success stories for learning Portuguese that you'd like to share? I could use an inspirational story right about now. (:

Maybe Portuguese isn't the language you want to learn. Without motivation and will to learn a language you won't make much progress.
Why are you learning Portuguese?

It's a beautiful and chic language. I wanted to learn a widely spoken romance language that wasn't Spanish or French. (I'm studying French too, but I'm gonna "finish" Portuguese first.)
I think I'd have the will if I had more inspiration to do so.

Maybe if you find some good TV shows or something in Portuguese you wish to understand, or maybe, some Portuguese/Brazilian friend that you wish to communicate with? Set a realistic goal and work in order to achieve it. If you do this I think you will get the inspiration you are looking for.

My realistic goal is to be able to read books and talk to natives in Portuguese. I have the will, I really only need good materials. That's mainly why I started this topic. And also, I never hear stories of people who've achieved fluency in Portuguese. I wanted to be able to hear stories of how others learned the language.
And while we're on the subject of TV shows in Portuguese, do you have any recommendations on what I should search for?

The text book "Brasil, Língua e Cultura" is excellent. The dialogues give you a really good sense of how Portuguese is actually spoken in São Paulo. I used it when I was learning Portuguese and it was very helpful.
No single method will teach you a language. Your best bet is to switch things up and use a variety of resources. I highly recommend practicing what you know with native speakers as soon as possible. Try to focus on little topics that you can use for conversations. I find that when I use it, I remember it.
Boa sorte!
