Finished Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal. The narrator was brilliant. I wonder if he
has done any other audio books. Before getting back to do L&R again with Harry Potter, I am going to start on a new book with a slightly different method. I got Ramona y su madre from my local library; a children's book so I hope easy vocab. I don't have audio, but I intend to read this book with a dictionary. I don't know what the story is so aim is to actually "read" the book, understand the story by the end of it. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

READING WITH DICTIONARY EXPERIMENT
Change of plans. I have gone through about 15 pages of Ramona y su madre with a dictionary, and I found that not only it takes too long but it also rather tricky. Just looking up words doesn't necessarily show the exact context, because then when I type up the sentence into google translator, it comes up with a better sentence that makes sense. So essentially I would be reading a book through the translator. While I have picked up few words, and of course understood the context of the story, I do not believe it is the most efficient method of study. So I am going to move back to L&R sooner than I had planned. ** L&R I had intended to go back to Harry Potter after trying this book, but instead I am going back to it now. I have already read the whole book in Spanish while listening to Spanish audio at the same time. Now, moving on to second step. Reading in Spanish & English. I know the story in English, but I intend to do this paragraph by paragraph to actually focus on each word in each sentence. The third step will be with Spanish Audio and English Reading. ** Alternative to Dictionary I don't have Spanish audio for other books, so I intend to do a lot more parallel reading. L & R Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal
I have started the second step today. I listen to the audio in Spanish and read Spanish at the same time. About a paragraph, or if it is a big paragraph then a few sentences at a time. Then, read English text. Then, read Spanish text out loud without audio. Sometimes, I read Spanish text out loud first, and then read English. Both works. The reason for still having the audio is to get more grasp over pronunciation. Talking out loud by myself without audio means I focus on the words more as I can't say them as fast as the audio yet, and also then when I read English, I am more aware of the context. I also have an online dictionary and ANKI open during L-R. So I look up words I don't know. Not necessarily every word, but all the ones that seem important to the context, and I add them to ANKI. This way, they should be included in my daily vocab practice, and also hopefully when I come across those words later in the book, I will remember their meaning. It is rather slow going, but I have to remind myself that I can't learn a language in a week, and have to put the work in to get the results. But I am quite hopeful about this, because I think it's helping in getting used to the context of the sentences, pronunciation and just vocab in a more subconscious manner. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Today:
Pimsleur 1 Unit 26, and partial Unit 27 Linguaphone Disc 3 complete ANKI Vocab Harry Potter y la Piedra Filosofal - more L&R with Spanish Text and Audio and English text. Again, I keep adding key words to ANKI. For this, I am now going to also listen to just the audio. Currently, I have much more understanding when I read the words, but in the normal speech, if I am not reading, I miss a lot. So listening skills clearly need more practice. Another thing I will be doing for that is to watch the shows in Spanish without subtitles some of the time. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Pimsleur Unit 27 done today.
Also listened to Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal audio. L-R Method This is going to get a lot more of my study time, and Harry Potter Book 1 is the main subject. It may not be exactly as the method was originally described, but I have taken at least main points out of that. Exposure, long text, and I intend to go over it repeatedly. It's exactly one month today since I started learning Spanish, and I feel like I have made more progress in this than any other language in such short time, because my studies have been far more focused. I have a goal, and I know where I am going, and vague directions for how I am going to get there. You seem to be progressing at a rate of knots now, which is wonderful news indeed. I think our approaches are similar in many ways, and it's always good to see another fellow traveler on the road.

a) If you have the books electronically, use a pop-up dictionary - it'll save you tons of time. b) That's not L-R (it's missing intensity, you're interrupting it to look up words and use anki, etc).
