Hi there,
It has been a long time since I last updated my log (sorry!), but I'm glad to let you
know guys that everything is still proceeding according to the original plan ;)
A few weeks ago I discovered that the university I'm applying to had deliberately
postponed to December the French language entry test (I was originally supposed
to sit on September!) and since then I basically slow down a bit the intensity of my
studies. I'm obviously still sticking to the scheduled I made myself, but not being in
a rush anymore, I'm now taking everything with a much more relaxed and easy - but still
disciplined - approach. I'm working my way through the ASSIMIL course as usual and I'm
glad to communicate you all that 3 weeks ago - and after more or less 3 months of
consistent study - I was able to make my very first call in French! To be completely
honest, I missed the last part of the conversation, but still I was able to manage the
situation with relative ease. I felt proud of myself somehow, it was the kind of
confirmation I needed.
That being sad, I'm now on lesson 70 and hopefully I'll be done with the course by
November at last. I keep listening obsessively to those dialogues over and over again
to the point I can parrot and sometimes even anticipate the speaker. I know that in
someone's eyes this approach might turn out to be counterproductive, but I'm
compensating this poor strategy with tons of other audio resources for natives (eg. TV
shows, series of any sort, news, etc) I think my listening abilities are improving, but
sometimes I'm overwhelmed by the speed of the spoken language.
As far as my reading abilities are concerned, I can understand pretty much everything
(except literal texts, obviously) as long as I've got a dictionary with me. Grammatical
structures don't represent a problem anymore, but I'm facing again the obstacle of the
"passive vocabulary" again. In fact, as it happened for Spanish, I'm noticing in French
as
well a huge existent lack of balance between my active and passive knowledge of words.
Hopefully, I'll fix the situation soon before it's too late...
My speaking abilities are contrariwise still pretty poor. I really need to find a
French-speaking buddy on Skype to start practicing with as soon as possible! But, well,
I'm actually moving to Brussels within 10 days or so, I don't think I'll have much
troubles finding native speakers to make some practice...
My writing abilities are ok, I usually make small mistakes here and there, but nothing
to be really worried about - the Prof. Arguelles's "Scriptorium Method" rocks.
:)
