haha! I finished "Easy French Reader," which I highly recommend to beginning and intermediate students. Now I've started "Le Yiddish" and am on lesson 8. I can't seem to get the CDs to work on my computer, so I haven't started listening to the dialogues. I'm not too worried about it yet, as the material is really straightforward. I'm also on page 14 of "The First Hebrew Reader," which is a Biblical Hebrew book that contains sections from the bible. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I recognize a lot of Yiddish from German obviously, are the rest of the words from Hebrew, or are they mostly of Slav or unknown origin? 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I loved studying Yiddish partially because of all the loanwords. The language has words of Hebraic, Aramaic, Slavic, and Romance origin, which makes for fascinating study. Words rooted in a Hebraic or Aramaic origin are described as being of the לשון־קודש (loshn-koydesh, "holy tongue"); we called them "loshn-koydishdike werter" in my class. For those of us who knew German in that course, these words caused us the most trouble because the vowels generally aren't marked, same as in Hebrew. But the students with knowledge of Hebrew weren't off the hook, either; some words of Hebraic origin change in stress or vowel sound when used in Yiddish (as I know no Hebrew, I unfortunately can think of no examples). Here are some loanwords of various origins: Loshn-koydesh (pronunciation and meaning in parentheses): שבת (shabes, Saturday), מלחמה (milkhome, war), תּלמידה/תּלמיד (talmid/talmide, [male/female] student), לבֿנה (levone, moon), כּמעט (kimat, almost), משפּחה (mishpokhe, family/relatives)...there are lots more. Slavic (pronunciation, Polish word for comparison, and meaning in parentheses): מאַלפּע (malpe, małpa, monkey), פֿאַרטעך (fartekh, fartuch, apron), פּילקע (pilke, piłka, ball), פּאַפּיראָס (papiros, papieros, cigarette) Romance לייענען (leyenen, to read), which is from the Old French "leyer." Magdalene- a dank! Ikh hob a shayle. How are you typing with vowels? I have a Hebrew keyboard installed, but I can't figure out where the vowels are. I don't have the option of installing a Yiddish keyboard in windows for some reason. I guess I'll do a google search.
As for progress, I reread "Stupeur et Tremblements," this time while listening to the audio book. I really enjoyed this exercise, because I feel it helps build both reading and listening skills. I am going to try to find more interesting books and their corresponding audiobooks. I've been watching a lot of Russian and Hebrew television. 1 person has voted this message useful |
