In my post above from 28th Jan I placed a link to some TELC mock examinations that
utilise the CEFR scale. On the spur of the moment this morning, I decided that I would have a go at the A1 exam. I will explain below exactly what I did and how it went: First of all, Although it is a complete exam (well, Part C of one section is missing in the A1 exam), it is not possible to sit the full exam at home without the aid of a teacher/native speaker. This is because the exam has both written and oral elements for which no definitive answers are supplied. Therefore, I only completed the parts of the exam which gave definitive answers at the end of the exam paper. Here are the results: There were 40 questions in the parts I completed. MY SCORE: 37/40 Due to the scoring system of the exam, some questions are given more than 1 mark each and vice versa. Therefore, there were 72.5 marks available in total for all the parts of the exam I completed. MY MARK: 66.5/72.5 = 91.72% On another site I read that 60% is the minimum to pass the exam. There are 4 levels to passing the exam although I could not find an associated mark scale. The 4 levels are as follow: Very good Good satisfactory Pass I am very happy with the results from this exam. If this was the proper exam, according to my score, I would have already passed the exam with a SATISFACTORY score without completing 2 written parts of the exam and the oral section. Of course, I would've hoped to have passed such an exam considering how far into my studies of Italian I am. It is still nice, however, to have completed (a large part of) an official (mock) exam paper and get such a high score as 91.72% Since you only get one shot a doing each exam paper (there's no point in doing them more than once as that wouldn't yield true results), I think I will give it a little more time and then have a go at the A2 exam. The results from last weeks Assimil active wave lessons are as follows: Lesson 15 - 97.70% Lesson 16 - 96.65% Lesson 17 - 95.67% Lesson 18 - 96.79% Lesson 19 - 97.13% Lesson 20 - 94.57% Another good week of results as you can see. I am quite happy with my method of using Assimil, although this week was a bit harder than the previous week, as far as the active wave is concerned. It's nothin major but as Assimil covers more lessons, it introduces different ways to say the same thing. Therefore, on a few occasions I have been a bit confused but it has been the kind of thing where when I look afterwards I go 'oh, of course!". At the moment, I would say that I have been watching more Italian TV than English TV and bit by bit I feel as is I am understanding more and more of what is said. An interesting thing is that I begin to notice new phrases and expressions everywhere once they have appeared in Assimil. It's kind of like when someone buys a car and then starts to see that make of car everywhere. It's a good indication that as far as passive skills go, Assimil really does make a difference. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Last week I did an A1 mock TELC exam paper at home and then posted the results. Having
some time to myself this morning, I thought I'd have a go at the A2 paper. I have just completed all the possible parts in the same way as last time. This time, due to the parts I can't complete for the reasons mentioned in the other post, the maximum marks I could achieve were 61. MY SCORE: 52/61 points = 85.25% In the multiple choice section my score was: Part 1: 8/10 (4/5 points) Part 2: 4/8 (4/8 points) Oral comprehension: Part 1: 5/5 (10/10 points) Part 2: 2/2 (4/4 points) Part 3: 5/5 (10/10 points) Written comprehension: Part 1: 4/4 (8/8 points) Part 2: 2/4 (4/8 points) Part 3: 4/4 (8/8 points) With these results, I would've only required an additional 8 points to have passed the exam from the remaining 39 available from the parts I can't fairly do at home. Despite a few silly errors from myself in my answers, I am very happy with these results. I think I can safely say I would have passed this exam if it were the real thing. The other thing to note is that I completed the exam in a much quicker time than you would normally be given due to it still being relatively easy. From now on, I will consider myself of at least A2 ability in Italian. I will do the B1 test at some point in the future, probably as I move further on with Assimil. Oh yes ! Me too! Especially in "Il Commissario Montalbano" - suddenly I am understanding whole sentences instead of just words here and there - and they are coming straight out of Assimil. I love Assimil !!! ;-) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Well, since my last update I have been busy busy, busy...with Italian. As the idea of
learning a language for me is to enjoy the usage of it, be it spoken by myself or hearing it from another source such as the TV, internet or person etc, I have been exploring other ways of 'enjoying' Italian whilst continuing on with my normal studies. Firstly, I re-watched some of the Peppa Pig episodes that are on Youtube in Italian. I was quietly surprised and pleased to find that I now understand virtually every word. I still have to concentrate on the video, but I can now fully understand it. This lead me onto other things on Youtube such as Postman Pat. I have now learnt the theme tune to this in Italian. Oops, I nearly forgot - I have learnt to play Lasciatemi Cantare on my guitar as well - I really enjoy that song. I noticed the San Remo festival is nearly upon us and whilst looking on Youtube I came across a performance by Domenico Modugno of Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu from 1958. I had only a vague recollection of the melody before I played the video but it probably one of the few Italian songs I had heard before I started to learn Italian. After listening again and again, I now really like this song. I have also been listening to Paolo Meneguzzzi. It's not my kind of music normally, but is helpful to listen to whilst learning the language. All in all, things are going great. The key for me is to vary activities to prevent boredom setting in. The thing is though, virtually every day I wake up thinking how quickly can I put on my Assimil CD, turn on the TV and put RAI news on, or get on Youtube and listen to some Italian music. In the next post, I will publish my results from this week's translation exercises - I don't have them to hand right now...ed e' tempo per me di andare a letto! This sounds like great news teammate! I have just started watching TV in Arabic, and while it is still mostly
gibberish I do catch the occasional word, which fuels my motivation and I find myself trying to find time to watch TV or listen to the radio as much as possible like you in Italian. I will be joining you in Italian in a mere 45 days! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

You're making awesome progress!! My Spanish is coming along great, but I find I never
