Hi all,
Long time lurker and first time poster. I've been slacking in my language studies so I figured posting my progress online would motivate me a bit.
I should mention that I'm also studying German actively, but I'm enrolled in Ger 302 at my uni so I don't feel the need to focus on that in this thread.
Anyway, my main language for this thread is Hungarian, and no, I have no idea why I'm learning it, besides a general interest in eastern Europe. I love the regularity and logic of it. I am definitely still a beginner, and I'm finding, as expected, that my progress in reading comprehension is progressing much faster than the others.
My Hungarian materials:
Assimil Hungarian with Ease
FSI Hungarian
Anki flashcards: I make them myself from the other materials, and for now they're just single words. At some point I will begin to use complete sentences.
As for Czech, I've only been studying it for a week or so, maybe spent 2 hours total on it. So I'm about as fresh as they come with it. FSI's 'FAST' Czech course is the only source I've really come across, so for now that's it (I will start up another Anki deck with it soon). I'm learning for the...ah, women, as well as the aforementioned interest in eastern Europe.

Szia !
It's nice to see another Hungarian learner around :). How long have you been studying ?
We have instaured a hungarian tread in the multilingual lounge - you could post some little stories, notes etc, to keep you motivated and... us :)
I'm looking forward to read your log !

I'm also pleased to see another Hungarian learner. Welcome! There's also the Team TAC 2011, you could join the Hungarian team? There's just me and Lapislazuli at the moment, we could do with an extra teammate.
I'll be happy to help you with any Czech questions you might have.

Hi Kisfroccs,
I've only been studying it seriously for a couple of weeks. I think it's difficult to remember the words when I'm not used to the spelling yet. But I'll try to post in the Hungarian thread in the next couple of days. Thanks for the invite.

That sounds like it would really help keep me studying. What is TAC? I know it stands for Total something Challenge but I don't know what it entails.

Haha, thanks. Hopefully I'll advance enough in the near future to even have any questions. It's nice to have help in it already though!
Thanks for replying, guys, and I hope you will find my log to be enthralling, captivating, exciting, and so on.

Well now I'll go ahead and actually update on my studies for today:
In Assimil Hungarian I went over the second review (lesson 14) as well as the dialogues for lessons 12 & 13. I'm trying to take it slow until I warm up to the spelling and such, but I'm also pretty eager to learn. I'll try to wait a week or so before I move on.
Lesson 12, Városnézés Budapesten (Sightseeing in Budapest), seemed to emphasize the demonstrative pronouns and how they work with the articles. For example 'Ez az épület' would translate to 'This is the building' or 'this building' but if the article is left out, 'Ez épület', would mean 'this is a building.' Using the indefinite article has the same effect as the latter.
Lesson 13, Magánügy (A Private Matter), introduced a bunch of -ik verbs: mosakszik (to wash), felöltözik (to get dressed), vacsorázik (to have dinner), etc. It also included how to say "from [time] to/until [time]". I believe to say "from 9 to 5" you would say "kilenctől öttig". So "from" is a "tól/től" ending on the start time and "to/until" is an "ig" ending on the ending time. Looks pretty easy.
(Sorry to be so verbose but I'm hoping that writing about this will help me remember it better.)
My Czech updates will be short for a while because I suck at it:
I finally started an actual Anki deck and put in 22 words from the 1st dialog in the FSI FAST course. Things like 'I' (Já), 'and' (a), 'but' (ale), and 'only' (jenom). I especially like 'where' (kde) and 'you are' (jste). The Czechs aren't fans of the vowels, apparently.
I've ordered Teach Yourself Czech and it should be here tomorrow. When it gets here I will switch to that for Anki cards because of the more practical vocabulary and higher quality audio.
Holnapig (until tomorrow?),
The Stephen

Hi
I saw that you speak German. Personnaly I use www.vokker.net instead of ANKI. It's the same purpose, but I think it works better :). Try it, and if you dislike, then continue with ANKI :)

It's called the Team Annihilation Challenge, basically it's just another way to motivate everybody, to be part of a team for a year and help each other. All you have to do is study and keep a log!
Your log should be interesting for me because of the 2 languages chosen. I'll be following it.

Szia! I hope you'll have a lot of fun and interesting moments learning Hungarian.
And I agree with Hribecek, it would really be nice to have you as a member in our TAC-Team.
And I notice Hungarian and Czech seems to be a popular combination. I also plan to take Czech for my next new language.
