Michel Thomas came in the mail yesterday! As soon as it came I immediately transferred all the CD's over to my MP3 player. I am already almost done with the first CD out of ten. My impression so far is good. I can tell that Michel's accent is not native, but that's ok because I am learning how to say a lot of new things in a very short time.

I am stil having some problems with my own pronunciation. Specifically the R and nasal vowels. I can pronounce them, but only very slowly. I'm hoping that this will improve once I start working with Assimil.

I do have one question for those of you that have used Michel Thomas before. How fast is too fast? At the pace I'm going I should be done with both the beginning and advanced courses in a little over a month. Is this too fast or too slow?

I will update again with my progress once I am farther along.

Today I had a little pronunciation break through I think. I was having trouble with the nasal vowels and Rs in words...I was able to pronounce them correctly, but only very slowly. Today while reading through the Michel Thomas transcript out loud it was like everything fell into place. All of a sudden I could read everything very quickly. I'm sure my pronunciation is still not perfect, but now that I have the hang of it it's actually very fun to pronounce words and sentences :D

I am now done with the first two Michel Thomas CDs. I'm still really impressed by them :) After each CD I have been entering all the new words into Anki. So far I have 102 new words memorized!

I have finished a little more than half of the CD's. I continue to be impressed by them and have already ordered the advanced course. I feel like I can now form a good variety of simple sentences in the present tense :)

Also, I am thinking about ordering Assimil, but I'm not sure if I should wait to start that until after I'm done with Michel Thomas.

Today I finished the Michel Thomas French beginner course. I thought it would take me about 20 days to finish, but that turned out to be too slow. I actually finished in about half that time (12 days). I really liked the course. It was easy and painless and I feel like I learned a lot and it will a good solid base for using further courses like assimil.

Well, the Michel Thomas Advanced course is on back order until later in April :(

However, Assimil is arriving on Monday and I also ordered Schaum's Outline of French Grammar which will be here tomorrow. So I think I'll start with Assimil (one lesson everyday) and work on a little bit of the grammar book everyday too. I will also continue to enter words into Anki. Right now I have 225 words all from the Michel Thomas Beginner Course.

Assimil and my grammar book arrived! Still no Michel Thomas Advanced though...

I'm already on the 4th lesson in Assimil. My plan is to do one lesson every day. So far I really like it. Thanks to Michel Thomas none of the lessons so far have seemed difficult. New words have been introduced though, and I'm thinking about entering the new words into Anki even though I am only in the passive wave.

Tomorrow I am going to go by my school library to see if they have French In Action available. I checked the libraries website and all it says is "French In Action." It does not indicate whether or not they have the audio and videos, so we'll see. I'd really rather not pay for the audio since I'm just a college student trying to save money lol...

I'm on lesson 8 of Assimil now. I'm really liking it, I feel like it's helping my pronunciation a lot. So far the pronunciation part is the most difficult, everything else is still familiar to me from Michel Thomas.

I also stopped by the library at my college, and they did not have French in Action :( However, they did have a grammar book called English Grammar for Students of French. I checked it out and so far have read the first 75 pages. I feel like it's a good grammar book to start out with because it explains English grammar side by side with French grammar. I'm actually going to read through this book before I continue with my Schaum's grammar book because I think the latter is a bit more advanced.

Lastly, I memorized all of the word ending patterns that indicate gender. I found the list of patterns on about.com, and also in my new grammar book.
