Someone pointed out http://albalearning.com/audiolibros/ the other day (well, I read it the other day) and it is
fantastic for Spanish-English. They do all the alignment for you.

I've found someone to work with me, and the project is underway. Here's a few notes.

-The database will store details and reviews on monolignual books, bilingual books and
audiobooks. Unlike other databases I've seen, entries will be organised by 'works', so
the entry for 'Alice in Wonderland' will contain information about different
translations, where they are published, audiobooks available etc. You can search for
records in a variety of ways.

-It should be possible to extend the database in the future to contain other types of
materials, such as language materials, podcasts etc.

-The site should be able to access the WorldCat database, to fill in details about a
book automatically when given an ISBN, and perhaps reviews from 'Goodreads.'

-I am trying to think of ways in which material could added automatically from
different sources. For example, create records for all the audiobooks at librivox,
texts at project gutenburg etc. Perhaps an simple interface that the owners of the
different sites could copy/paste details of their materials into.

Thoughts welcome.

Sorry for the delay with this project. It is progressing, and a basic prototype is nearly ready. I have hired a freelancer to work on the programming, as I don't have the time and experience to do all aspects of the project myself.

The back-end (the database that stores all the data) is complete, and the front end (the web interface) is about 50% complete. So far, I have paid for 50 hours of work. To finish things up properly, it will likely need another 50 hours of paid work, which will cost about $750 USD. At the moment I don't have this money, otherwise I wouldn't mind to pay it.

I called the 'Arts and Humanities Research Council,' to see if this is something they might be interested in funding, but they only operate within the frameworks of university projects. Does anyone know of anyone else who might be able to offer something towards the project? Perhaps a university or library etc.? I could offer to accept donations from individuals with a site like 'Kickstarter,' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kickstarter), but I don't know if this is realistic.

The site will be very useful once it's up and running, it's really coming together as I had envisaged. I've been coming across useful resources from time to time, there's a lot out there, often not even mentioned anywhere on the web (audiobooks in Arabic, Persian, Hindi etc.). This site could help people make the most of what is available.

Thanks. I've been working a lot recently on some publications, bilingual English/French,
English/Arabic and French/Arabic versions of 'The Little Prince,' which will come with
audio recordings on CD in both languages. See here:
http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?T ID=28706&PN=1

This should be ready soon, and if successful, would provide the funds to finish the
database.

About the money. Have you considered asking some structures of the EU? As one of the main educational goals of the EU is the end of monogloterry, you might find support there.

As the translations are often "protected" by copyright, would it be possible to put there translations made by non-professionals? They would be made for free and if there was a way to let others know how good you found the translation, it might work.

That's good idea, I will look into it. It may not offer a fast result, however.

For very popular books, you're right, you do come across people who make their own
translations. For hosting texts, there would be a big advantage to being based in a
country with life+50 copyright, like Canada, Australia, the middle east etc. (See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries'_copyright_le ngth ) A lot more
contemporary authors open up to you (like George Orwell, Albert Camus etc.)
