You can also watch Anime in a variety of different languages besides Japanese, so why do a lot of people bother learning it for this specific reason? :)

Well, it's obvious that a lot of the meaning in words and cultural notes wil get lost in translation and this is also a huge motivation for me, to get access to raw material in the target language instead of adaptations, and I think that a lot of people also adventure themselves into a new language for this purpose.

I find the question a bit strange, frankly.

Well, maybe the question is a bit strange, maybe I'm not phrasing it quite right, but people seem to know what I am asking for.

I have some bad news for you: You will NOT learn French.

Not with your current attitude, anyway.

You know, I completely agree with you. The reason I am finding French such a struggle is because of my totally negative attitude towards it. But these suggestions are doing a world of good - Bao mentioned on page two that she recognises that's exactly what I'm trying to do with this thread - to find inspiration to banish the negativity and pick myself up. Thank you for making your point, because you're right.

Sorry if that sounds fatalistic.

No problem - a frank approach like that is sometimes all that will help :]

Thank you to everyone who has posted so far, you're all coming up with fantastic suggestions.

You get to communicate with France, Wallonia, most of West Africa, North Africa and Quebec. That's why I can't wait to start. If you're into literature it's hard to beat French, just think of Proust...In Search of Lost Time could give you a lifetime of enjoyment all on its own. You must already know the south of France is big into rugby, so being able to sit down at a brasserie and talk with local fans would be great for any follower of rugby. And because of the French involvement in anthropology, Egyptology, etc I'm quite sure French resources on linguistics are pretty substantial.

At this point, I wouldn't even focus on the language aspect of it. The language we use in our posts is usually pretty telling, and your original post had a tone of disliking not just the French language, but all things French (the "rabbit on" as well as the "obviously something that France is good at" comments come to mind - but maybe I'm mistaken in my interpretation).

It may be a little late for it this time of year, but do you like to ski? Go skiing in the French Alps. Or find something else completely unrelated to learning the language that you would enjoy doing either in France or Belgium - and make it a mini-vacation with your girlfriend. You may just come away from it with a desire to actually learn the language a bit.

I don't even know why I'm learning French. I'm just doing it just for resume material and to be able to think/talk in a different language. I don't really like French music all that much besides a band called Noir Désir. The only French movie I've seen in the past year is a movie called "Micmacs" and that was, to put it bluntly, retarded as hell. But I thought "Le placard" was funny.

I'm also into politics (it was my major in college) and want to see if France goes far-right in the upcoming elections (National Front). I see that being a tidal point of change throughout Europe if it happens.

I guess you're talking about the president elections. Nope, this scenario is highly unlikely. What could happen is that the socialists win (think Dominique Strauss-Kahn), mostly at the expense of Sarkozy (his party is centre-right). The nationalists could get some protest vote, but in any case it will be a small minority. And one film being 'retared hell' doesn't tell much about French cinema as a whole. Try watching Des hommes et des dieux.
