Not every language has to be taken seriously, right? Maybe you just feel like trying
something on an impulse.
We have a bunch of people studying Slavic/Slavonic (which is the correct term?) languages.
Can you conceive of learning another one of them just by listening? I'm up for a lazy try. (I
don't mean "learn learn" of course, just train my listening enough so I can understand the
spoken language.)
If you study Russian, can you suggest some listening I could do? Whatever you think is most
appropriate, it might have to be very basic.

Yes, obviously. But I meant more along the lines of radio or something that's not
specifically a teaching material.

My favorite source to hear Russian is, as oddly as it sounds, the Russian version of "NHK WORLD RADIO JAPAN". It's a half-hour news segment covering global events that's updated every single day. It's actually available in 17 different languages (including English, so you can switch back and forth to attempt to find parallels in meaning).
I dragged-and-dropped it into my iTunes, but I believe you can stream it here:
http://www3.nhk.or.jp/rj/podcast/mp3/russian.mp3
And this is the main web page:

If you're looking for a MT alternative, you could give the Just Listen 'n Learn series a try. I have the Arabic one and I really like the concept of the course.

I downloaded the NHK language lessons which are also given in the different languages of instruction, which include Russian. The Russian in the recordings is quite good! It's very fast, but it's also the standardized newscast type of language that sounds very clear.
