Has anyone tried these Spanish courses ? I'm tempted to purchase the Intermediate Level Pasos 2, but I'm not sure if it's a complete stand alone course, or something used for classroom study ?

I have Pasos 1, we use this in my Spanish evening class occasionally. The textbook reminds me of the ones I had for learning languages in school - a non-threatening layout and lots of pretty pictures! It has no answer key but if you were using it at home you would probably buy the multimedia pack anyway, this has 3 cd's (all in Spanish if I recall correctly, lots of different speakers) and an incredibly useful little support book that contains the answers for the exercises and transcripts from the cd's - my copy is very dog-eared. There is an activity book that can be bought separately for further practise that can be used in parallel with the main course book, this does contain an answer key. Whilst there are a few exercises specifically for classroom/partner work most of it is suitable for home learning.
Is it any good? - I don't really feel able to answer this as I'm still very much a beginner and I tend to use other resources at home so that I am not duplicating work in class. I suspect that a determined student could get through Pasos 1 fairly rapidly which makes me think that Pasos 2 is probably still beginners level rather than intermediate as claimed on the packaging - but I've not actually looked at it yet.
On the whole I don't regret buying Pasos 1 and will probably get Pasos 2 if the price remains low but I wouldn't purchase the textbook alone as for me it is the cd's and support book from the multimedia pack that makes it worth while. The only problem I've had with Pasos 1 is that the cd's were not labelled correctly.

Thanks for the update. Does Pasos give detailed grammar explanations in English, or does it mainly stick to the target language ?

Each unit ends with a section on grammar explanations in English and exercises for these. The book also has a grammar appendix at the back (17 pages) with brief English explanations but it also provides lesson numbers in which examples of the grammar points are given.
I'll be happy to send you some images of a few pages if you pm me with your email, quality will not be brilliant but it may give you a better idea.
