Why did Korean abandon Hanja?

Hanja=漢字(pronunciation: 한자)

It's quite fascinating to read this post. I have recently been studying Hanja, and I actually recognize nearly all of the characters, and many of the words, through my knowledge of Japanese but I can read very little of the passage in Korean. Can you link me to the source of this? I would be very interested in studying these sorts of excerpts.

It was 'abandoned' because it was a barrier to literacy amongst the people ( in reality it has not been completely abandoned though it seems likely that it will be over time given that each generation now uses it less and less. ).

The DPRK abandoned it first, I think, and the Republic of Korea has phased it out more gradually.

The characters, as opposed to the alphabet, are seen as a barrier to literacy. I suspect that nationalism may also play a part - Hanja is not indigenous to Korea.

I prefer Japanese writing system, because it borrowed "Kanji" from Chinese characters, even Hiragana and Katakana were all created based on Chinese characters (cursive hand & regular script). Please review the enclosed pictures. But I don't think it's very clever for Korean to give up Chinese characters "Hanja", mainly because there're really a lot of homonymous words in Korean articles. And only Hanja can make it open-and-shut, and keep away from confusion jamming.
