I don't know a lot about copyright law. There where a number of linguaphone courses published in the 20's and before, many with recordings (for instance, the Persian course, 1925 I believe.) Could the copyright have expired? I think here in the UK it's 70 years after the last authors death, or, if the author is unknown, 70 years after publication (1995). On sound recordings it's only 50 years in any case.

If so we could digitalize these courses and make them available on lulu etc., which would be useful expecially for the less studied languages like urdu, persian etc.

edit: typo

The problem with "unknown author" is that Linguaphone could pluck a sheet of paper out of their archives and say "ah, but we do know who the author is, and he died in 19 umpty-wotsit". What I don't know is whether we would be able to force them to confirm or deny knowledge of the author's name in advance or if we'd have to wait for them to sue...!

This turned up under Google books, although I'm sure there are still earlier versions:

Linguaphone Conversational Course: Persian Grammar‎
by T Wolseley Haig - 1932

Linguaphone Conversational Course: Persian : Vocabulary‎
by T Wolseley Haig, Darab Khan, Mojtaba Minovi - 1932

Linguaphone Conversational Course: Persian : [16 Grammofoonplaten]‎
by T Wolseley Haig, Darab Khan, Mojtaba Minovi, Linguaphone Institute - 1932

(You can see the Persian course on the professors youtube linguaphone video.)

Linguaphone Oriental Language Course. London 1934. Bailey2) T. Grahame Bailey,
Hindustani (Urdu) Grammar. Linguaphone Oriental Language Course. London 1934.

There is a book (also a CD-ROM?) which some libraries might have that should have a record of these earlier books:

The British Library general catalogue of printed books to 1975

If someone takes a look, please see what other early courses were published.

There are then two challenges.. to find out when these authors passed away (many of them were well known scholars).. and then, if the copyright has expired, track down a copy of the books and records.

The thing to bear in mind is that Google books is American, but Linguaphone's a UK company so the courses were probably released here first. This means that while the copyright has expired in the US and Google Books can display it for free, we can't be certain that this holds for the UK as well.

"WE regret to record the death of Sir Wolseley Haig, distinguished as soldier, administrator and orientalist, which took place on April 28 [1938], at the age of seventy-two years."

So, the copyright on the Persian grammer book expired in 2008.

And it just so happens that the university library in Freiburg, where I'll be making a trip next week, has a copy of the course. Can anyone offer any advice as to the other authors?

Dr Mojtaba Minovi was publishing new material as late as 1972.

Darab Khan doesn't appear in any of the journals I've got access to on-line.
