That's incredibly encouraging. I've had a couple of defeats with French over the years.

Tell me more about this Fluenz thing.

Basically it works because it's fun... kind of like a video game. The structures and vocabulary you learn with Fluenz is a bit limited, but you learn the structure and words really well, including how to manipulate them as much as possible. But because it's fun you "keep playing". It's really encouraging, great way to start a language. after which like I said switch to assimil.

The program is a little "travelish" oriented, ordering food/drinks, buying stuff, airports, restaurants, more shopping, directions, renting a car/getting insurance, describing objects/locations, going to the doctor etc...

(BTW I'm thinking about selling the Fluenz course since I'm done with it, discounted of course, I'll prob. throw it up on ebay)

I used the Assimil French course (with an English base), and I absolutely loved it. After using it for less than a week, I donated all my other French courses to the library. :-)

Assimil's two courses will get you quite far—at least to a basic conversational level, with a vocabulary of a few thousand words. You could probably start shadowing real French audiobooks (or a podcast such as "One thing in a French day") after you finished them, if you didn't mind some heavy dictionary work for a little bit.

Don't miss the RFI podcasts, either, if you're interested in the news. They have a 10-minute daily news broadcast called Journal en français facile (with an accompanying transcript) that's really helped my post-Assimil listening skills.

The trick is to make the gap between Assimil and interesting native materials as narrow as possible. :-)

Just entered the active phase of Assimil, haha I love it! Yeah, the RFI podcasts are great. French is a definitely a fun language, pronunciation can be a pain but pretty cool once you get the hang of it.

More about 2/3 done with Assimil (Lesson 78 of 99). I have about 90% comprehension of
RFI, and have acquired both Assimil Perfeccionamiente and Business French.

Got lazy during winter break but back on track. On lesson 95, so I'll be starting Using
French (Spanish base next week). I've done a ton of reading native materials and started
listening to Popular Francophone music (whatever is top 40 in the Francophone world).
Watching TV5 Monde now, with a high level of understanding.

I'm thinking about getting an MBA, how do you like it and what does it entail (generally, I don't need specifics)?

I love my MBA program, there are different kinds of MBA's tailored for different
interests so do your homework.

I started doing Assimil's Using French (Spanish version). I plan on copying Each
Assimil
book's text 3 times (All the French Dialogs and exercises in each book) to help with my
writing. I just got my Quebecois de Poche, yesterday! :)

I plan on taking the DALF C1 next year (sometime in summer) at the Alliance Francais.
