[nl] I found out that luisterboeken.nl has some free samples. In particular there's a
lecture entitled "Het Geval Galilei, Hoorcollege door Herman Philipse" that is just over
an hour long to be found here:

I listened to it and I was pretty thrilled to be able to understand it from beginning to
end. The speaker enunciates well and it's a good recording for anyone who's learning
Dutch (even just to test your level of understanding).

[nl] I'm pleased to note that my listening comprehension has improved in leaps and bounds
over the last month. I do some listening every day and the characteristic observation is
that I don't have that much stamina yet. I can listen for maybe 30 minutes in one stretch
and then the quality of my concentration drops. My Dutch is at the point now where I
don't have to listen with complete intensity, but I do have to pay attention or else I
will lose words. I am also limited by my small vocabulary.
Eventually I expect to reach the point where I am with Italian, being able to hear
without really trying, but that will surely take a long time.

Goed zo!
Hoop alles gaat goed.

12 MONTH REVIEW
This log has now been live for a year. Let's take a look at the scores:
Italian: 18 months
Dutch: 12 months
It's been a pretty successful year, all in all. But my ability to balance Italian and
Dutch leaves something to be desired:
Italian: 800h (total: 1500h+)
Dutch: 225h
In the book department the analogy is equally clear:
Italian: 50 books
Dutch: 10 books
Things have picked up for Dutch a bit in the last few months, so it's now getting more
than half the time. But I'm thinking of giving it another year to get both contenders a
good distance further down the road. No new language for now.

My reading program of starting with "lesser books" seems to be working out quite well.
The idea is that at the beginning I will read things that are generally pleasant and
easy, that are preferably translations of foreign works (and thus translated into a
very neutral type of language). In other words, books that don't present any particular
challenge in terms of content or message, or language nuances.
In Italian I started with Robert Ludlum and in Dutch I have been reading various things
like Dan Brown etc. At this stage I don't really care very much about missing things or
maybe rushing too much to understand fully.
Then, later I've gotten enough practice to read more significant books. Right now I'm
reading "Il fu Mattia Pascal" and it's just lovely. I don't rush, I read slowly on
purpose to soak up the writing and it's fun. Pirandello is still a pretty recent
author, however, and in the coming months I am planning to come to Macchiavelli and
Dante.
Dutch is quite far behind at the moment, and I haven't thought much about what I want
to read in the future. The obvious choice I guess is Spinoza (even though he wrote in
Latin, so it would be a translation).

[nl] Inspired by ellasevia, I decided to make a recording.
Here it is: click
This is what I'm reading:
Some thoughts. Problems with emphasis and pacing are mostly to do with the fact that I was nervous about making mistakes and just trying to get through it.
Having said that, I'm still not quite comfortable with Dutch, The Dutch R troubles me; I try to use a rolling R as much as possible, but in some places it just doesn't sound right to me and I don't know if I'm doing it right. A less obvious flaw, which I only hear when I listen to myself on tape, is that my vowels aren't quite correct, here's my Norwegian having an unwelcome influence. Well, I don't think it's a big problem in this recording, but it's something I have to keep an eye on.

Very well done, Martin.
I like your voice; she doesn't need to sound more "Hollands".
