Small update. Still going on both fronts, but my Dutch is not a success, progress is
way too slow. I get thrown easily by unfamiliar accents, I'm missing a lot of common
expressions. Tried to fill out a tax form the other day, completely over my head. Don't
really know what else I could be doing, I'm sticking with books because that's how I
best maintain concentration. With movies and tv I just fade out and stop paying
attention, the content isn't interesting enough. Just now switched my reading to more
demanding books, hoping that reading philosophy in Dutch will help develop the higher
registers.

Another trick I'm trying is to grab official language from texts about taxes, insurance
etc, which has a lot of terminology that I don't know, and seed it into Anki. Next time
I have to deal with these topics I think I'll be prepared to understand much better.

My Italian is basically in decent shape. The fact that I'm not quite as thrilled at
being where I am after just over two years is just because my hopes and expectations
are unrealistic. Still having some trouble with the subjunctive, but I've done a whole
lot of explicit study on that and I don't think I will get any sharper right now, it's
gonna take a few years for that stuff to sink in deep enough to feel completely
natural.

Looks like I'm dipping my toes in the water, just started reading a book in French.
Wasn't really the plan but a trip to Paris can do that to you. What are ya gonna do.
Haven't officially started, so I'm not doing anything fundamental like a course or
grammar study. Just bought a book and thought I would try it out. It's going very slowly
and I'm making lots of notes on the pages, but this way is fun and it's surprising how
much I can understand.

Hello numerodix!
I must confess that your study will be my reason to study Italian one day!, your experiment to learn Italian is very impressive!, and especially through that great book La lingua Italiana per stranieri
I wish you the best of luck at your study

Robert

I'm surprised that I practically understood everything without studying a scrap of
French...

<3 Italian.

Are you counting your French hours? :)

That was actually the worst French ever and half-Italian (but who cares, it's supposed
to be bad at the beginning).

I am indeed, although I started studying it before I really had decided to so it's a
bit unofficial at the moment.
