[nl] Well, I'm going out on a limb to say that the first book in a new language is a
really special experience and in a way I wish it could happen more often. It is like a scaled down version of the drama of language learning in itself. I'm now only 2-3 days away from the end of my first book and I'm having moments now in which I almost forget that I'm reading in an unfamiliar language. I exaggerate slightly, but not by much. And yet I remember how hard it was at the beginning, because that was only a few weeks ago. I would read every sentence 2-3 times, but gradually you learn to let it go. It's only a book, it doesn't matter for the big picture if I understand this sentence or not, I still understand the story. [nl] Quite unexpectedly, it seems I have accelerated my learning at least twofold thanks
to the reading. I've just started another book and today when I was doing my daily Assimil (#62) I couldn't get over how easy it was. I then looked in the back of the booklet and even that lesson was easy. I still put things into Anki but at this point it's not even clear that it's necessary. I'm pretty sure I would pick up much the same stuff anyway. I can't get over how immensely powerful reading is. 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

[nl] It feels like a drag to complete Assimil. There's not that much left, 15 more days
of the passive phase, which is just too easy and not terribly interesting. In the active phase I'm on lesson 19, and that one I actually quite like cause I'm doing well in it. My reading has improved a lot and it's almost hard to believe that I only started 30 days ago. I read quite fluently now, and I even tend to race too much without paying enough attention to the things that I don't understand. I'm too eager skip them cause I can follow the plot anyway. After Assimil I think I'll hit a textbook. I have one on hand, but when I started studying from it a couple of months ago there was a lot I couldn't understand in the instructions. Plus I hadn't seen enough of the language yet to appreciate the lessons. This time I think I'll be ready for it. It's definitely necessary to do something along these lines to shore up my grammar, cause Assimil gives you a good intuition, but you have to polish that insight or you'll be making a lot of mistakes. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

[nl] Finally finished a comic book I've had for a couple of years now. I've tried reading
it before but it was no good, you really need to grasp a high percentage cause there is so little text. By now I was able to read it quite comfortably, the one word that kept popping up that I didn't get was gewoon. Hahah so true. Especially with even and eens, slippery little things, almost like dark matter of the language world. You know they're there and having some kind of an effect on the sentence, but as to what the exact meaning that they're inferring is, very hard to pinpoint. Gewoon means, 'usual' 'general' 'ordinary' 'common' - De gewone man = The common man. Op de gewone tijd = At the usual time. As you said, one of those words that is used very often and changes its meaning subtlely depending on context. Maar waar woont je in Nederland eigenlijk? Bent je het land aan het genieten? It's that it comes up in a lot of places where it doesn't make any sense at all, like "gewoon doen!" ~ just do it.
Ik woon nu in Den Haag. Ik ben in Nederland geweest al een paar jaren, eerst als student. Enkele jaren geleden had ik een cursus in het nederlands begonnen, maar die heb ik helaas nooit gecompleteert. Ik vind het studie van dit taal een beetje zwaar om me te motiveren voor, omdat ik weet dat het mogelijk is veel dingen uitvoeren in het engels. As you can see I can write what looks kind of like Dutch, but it's not exactly the thing. :) 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

Hi numerodix, glad you're posting again. I followed your Italian blog. I just got a hold
of La Lingua per stranieri and I had a question for you given that you have had a lot of experience with it. In hindsight, would you recommend spending a lot of time with this book as you did, or would you have gone about it a bit differently? It looks like a great resource and the old cassette tapes give it a real vintage feel. 1 person has voted this message useful |
