sorry for the poster of this post that it turned into a post arguing about my learning method.

Here is my opinion, and I am only referring to the first post from the originator. I would pick up about one to two
systems at the beginning like Teach Yourself German and say Colloquial German. Then i would get a lonely planet
phrasebook. I would start going through one of the courses for starters say the first 5 chapters, and then learn as
much basic vocabulary I can out of the phrasebook and that course. After say a few days of going through this I
would then, at the same time, submit writings on lang-8, a lot of these, and then get to chatrooms and start
speaking with people as soon as I can.
I have found in the past that if I get too many courses and try and go through them all, I just end up "studying" the
language rather than trying to learn what I actually need for starters and using it! I just learn the necessary
vocabulary as I go along.

I myself am trying to teach myself German. I would say that one of the greatest helps, and also the biggest hindrance is..this website!
There's a wealth of experience and knowledge to draw upon here but I find that fuels the procrastination in me. I end up learning about how other people are learning / have learned what I am trying to achieve, instead of doing it myself.
I wish I could find a way of overcoming this :)

Haha, HMS, I'm finding this too, over the last couple of days. Spent more time reading
about other people's stories than actually studying :P (Mostly because I lost my iPod and
I don't want to carry my laptop around everywhere at work. Tomorrow I get to sit down all
day, so German all day for me :D)
Delta: At the moment, I'm becoming quite fond of MT (though the female enrages me
constantly), so I'll be sticking to that, my LP phrase book, and any other methods I can
find for learning vocab (:
Also, any chance you can link me to some chat rooms?

One chat room that I use a lot is www.sharedtalk.com. I would say that if you want to really chat with Germans
you'll have to be up at the time that most of them will be up. I find, since there is a seven hour time change for me,
that I have to be up early to talk to them and get my practice in with them. It's a nice chat room.

What time is the room active? I'm using it now, but there is only 1 girl in there at the
moment. She seems nice enough, though. Hopefully everyone is like that lol.

Well, anytime really. Just pay attention to what the time is over there and get on during the day..sometimes when it
is in the afternoon in Germany, or any German speaking nation, it would be best. At least that is what i have seen.
Most people are very nice. I haven't had any problems at all. Good luck.
