Hi,

I'd like to get the Brazilian Portuguese version of Assimil, but unfortunately as many people know here, it is not available for English speakers. I thought, well, then get it for Spanish speakers since I know Spanish. But again, for Spanish speakers they only have it in Continental Portuguese. So, I figure I can get it in Italian, as I can get by in Italian, and mainly I want the course for the listening and reading practice. I know the grammar pretty well already. Anyway, I did have the possible idea of getting both courses and listening with the Italian version CD's but reading the Spanish book. Does anyone know if the dialogues are exactly the same and it is just different people reading them? Or, are they actually different dialogues? Or, maybe just slightly different?

Thanks a lot.

Steven

No, they're not. They're very different, at least between the Spanish "El nuevo português sin esfuerzo" and the French "Le brésilien sans peine".

sab15,

I am interested in some clarification. Are you asking about the two Continental Portuguese courses in the Spanish base and Italian base, if the Portuguese audio and book dialogues are the same?

The reply from iguanamon is a comparison between the French base Brazilian course and the Spanish base Continental Portuguese. Which I thought is obvious those two would be different.

It would be similar in asking if the French base American English course different than the Portuguese base British English.

Iguanamon has answered my question correctly.

I didn't think it is obvious that they would be different since they are the same language basically, like American English and British English. Except, of course, for some vocabulary differences and small differences in grammar usage.

That's why I also said "slightly different" in my question. I don't see why Assimil would make them completely different. If one was done already (I'm guessing continental), why not just take those exact dialogues, have a Brazilian edit them for how Brazilian's commonly say things, and then have a Brazilian read it. I'm surprised to hear that they are "very different".

Perhaps I'll just get the Italian one and just translate the dialogues on my own.

The Continental Portuguese begins:

Lesson One

In the Library

Good day.
Good day. You are the Portuguese gentleman?
I am. What would you like?

The Brazilian Portuguese begins:

Lesson One

The Rose, The Fruit

The rose is white.
The piano is new.
The car is practical.

There is no similarity between the two courses. They were made independently of each other.
