They're suspended because you clearly need to edit the card. Maybe add a full sentence
there instead of just the word, or do _something_ that makes you remember it better.

It's a sign of "hey you seem to have tremendous problems with these, so maybe you should
just write them all out on a piece of paper and figure out how to remember them".

Really, you need to be in charge of Anki -- don't let it be in charge of you. If you need more words/phrases in
your deck, input more words/phrases. If you want to learn more or fewer words than the default 20 per day,
change the default. Go into the settings and really get to know what can be customized. Review all the options
in both the Study Options and the Deck Properties, tab by tab. There are options to not only not suspend the
leeches but also to raise the threshold before cards are considered leeches in the first place.

If some cards have been suspended and you still want to practice them, open your deck, go into the browser
(click on the tiny magnifying glass/loupe icon at the top, then filter the browser to show your leech cards (Filter:
Leech). Then click Actions in the top menu of Anki (way at the top of the screen on my Mac, elsewhere if you use
a PC), then choose Reschedule. That brings up a window that you can use to reschedule the cards(s) to reappear
at the time of your choosing.

I'm like Ari -- I "shove lots of words" into Anki and learn them that way (I've set an embarrassingly high threshold
for leeches) but you may prefer to learn your material through other means first. Experiment to see what works
well for you , and best of luck on your studies!

I just checked. I have a deck of 937 Finnish words and 563 are marked as Leeches. I hate the whole leech business. I set the Leech threshold to maximum and I disable the 'suspend Leech feature' -- otherwise most of my cards get suspended. Originally with leech turned on, it would always be after the 40th or so rep on a card when I think I'm starting to get the word but I don't quite remember, and it gets leeched and never returns.   So just as I'm about to know the word it gets suspended, and then I get a whole new set of words which rep, and rep, and then when I start to almost know them, they get suspended also. What works for me is to do many many repetitions on the words, and eventually my brain starts to remember them.

The whole leech business is one of the things that ultimately caused me to start doing some initial memorization beforehand. Basically, while having the number of new words set to zero, I write down the new words in a small notepad (one that'll fit in your pocket), look them up in the dictionary while adding them to Anki, and then later on I'll memorize them, five at a time and then start reviewing them. Of course, I still get leeches, but hopefully that'll change since I disabled them.
Personally, I also think that where you learn the words from also matters, so I only learn words that appear twice in the books that I'm reading.

You may want to set the new words per day amount to zero for a bit (Open deck: Study Options --> New Cards), so
that you can consolidate your knowledge of the cards that you've worked on. I regularly change the number in this
setting on my various decks, depending on how pressed for time I am, how complicated the new cards are, how
many reviews I have to do, etc. There's no dishonor in setting it to zero for awhile, until you can catch up!

In addition, if you want you can remove the leech tag from any card(s) and reschedule them. In the browser, filter
your cards by "Leech", then select the ones that you want the tag removed from, then click the red x icon near the
top. That should bring up a small window where you type in the tag that you want to remove (in this case, Leech).
Then, reschedule them according to your preferences (see my prior post for how to do so if you're not sure).

Yeah, well I've already seen all of those cards already in that deck. I haven't added any new cards to it for months.   I still fail cards now and then so that as the failures add up eventually everything gets marked leech. What I did instead is I started an entirely new deck, using sentences from "Finnish Sentence of the Day" on Facebook -- and I test from Finnish to English, and again, these are all gradually getting all marked as Leech, though I don't suspend, so it's just a curiosity -- to sort by leech and see how many are flagged this way.
