Good luck.
Do you know any French person willing to converse with you? You can try to have a conversation on Skype.

Great plan, I believe it will work for both you and your son. Good luck.
There is a series of easy readers by CLE. The lowest level requires knowledge of just a few hundreds of words, so it is quite motivating to read something that early. There is quite a lot of these stories so it might not be that hard to find something interesting for your son. That is the worst trouble with easy readers usually.
Perhaps you have already thought of this but as you have an amount of vocabulary set, perhaps Anki or other SRS might be great for you. With daily short session, even your son might soon see that 1000 words is really not as much as it seemed at first sight.
Again, good luck.

Thanks for the positive responses everyone.
I have Anki, and have entered the first chapter's vocabulary and sentences into it. However, as we do vocabulary together, I prefer paper flashcards at this point. I showed him Anki, he shrugged his shoulders, so I left it at that.
How do you find CLE books? Searching Amazon.fr for "CLE" didn't get the right results. What do the letters stand for? And do they have audio?
Edit: I found the CLE website, and the section for "Adolescents". They have four levels of books, based on the number of words in the book, and many of them have an mp3 CD. I found some on their website, then put them in my amazon.fr panier. Thanks for the suggestion!
The website is: http://www.cle-inter.com/recherche-8.html

I just found this log and I think it's a wonderful thing. My daughter (10) won't start a foreign language until class 7, otherwise I'd start a log with her today! Maybe this log will inspire more family learning!

I second what someone mentioned on the previous page: get a copy of French in Action and work through it.
Good luck to you and your son.
