I've noticed a lot of people have recommended French in Action, but there's a lot to it. Do people just get the DVD's? Or do they use the textbooks, workbooks and CD's?
I'm thinking of just getting the DVD's and seeing how it goes, since it looks like the FIA textbooks are for classroom use. Any opinions on using the FIA DVD's + some self-study book?

I got them all, but the DVDs + other books would be fine.

Hi
I love reading about your attempts to help your son learn French. I find it very inspiring as I am currently planning to do the same for my daughter (and eventually my younger kids), only with Spanish. She's starting Y8 this Autumn and won't actually be learning Spanish until Y9 but I reckon getting a head start can't be a bad idea :) Especially considering the fact that I hardly know a word of Spanish atm. I've got hold of Pimsleur and have also ordered the Easy Spanish Reader.
Good luck with your French studies! Can't waint to read about your progress!

Last night we finally finished "week 1" of Fast French. It took about 4 weeks, LOL. We were doing other things as well, but even so I don't think you can finish one week of the book in 30 minutes a day and actually learn the vocabulary, not to mention the grammar. Still, it's a pretty good book. But I feel it's more important to be comfortable with the material than to finish it quickly.
We did the end of chapter test together, and scored 100% (not taking into account minor errors such as wrong accents, etc). We have learned about 85 flashcards, and know them all pretty well. At this rate of vocabulary acquisition, 85 in 4 weeks, we will easily exceed our goal of learning 1000 words in a year.
Besides Fast French, we have looked at the first chapter of Les Portes Tordues, and read a couple Max et Matilde stories together. His favourite activity has been lyrics training (http://www.lyricstraining.com/), using the song Toi et Moi by Guillaume Grand. We got the CD with that song as well because we liked it on lyrics training.
It has been a while since I last posted. I originally thought I would post after finishing each chapter, but since it's taking longer than I thought, I intend to post more frequently (probably weekly).
