In our Scandinavian/Nordic languages resources thread, one poster asked whether Assimil CD-ROMS would run on the Windows 7 operating system.

I sent the question to Assimil's customer service, and they said that their courses with CD-ROM do not run on Vista and Windows 7. This is useful to know if you are considering buying one of their CD-ROM courses and your computer has one of the newer Windows operating systems.

I post this information in the Language Programs, Books & Tapes forum as I assume this information is important to language learners of any language, not only learners of the Nordic/Scandinavian languages.

Note: This post is about their CD-ROM courses, not their courses which typically consists of a book + CDs. Unlike the CD-ROMs, the CDs contain no programs and therefore can be played on any computer.

Ouch. Windows 7, I can understand, but Vista? They're stuck in a shrinking market...

Thanks for letting us know.

I'm not sure what's going on here. I've gotten 3 Assimil courses, New French with Ease, Using French, and Spanish with Ease. None of them run on any OS strictly speaking, as all of them are collections of CD tracks. Audio CDs don't run on computers, you have to run a program to play them as audio CDs.

I had no problems using a CD ripping program to convert them into mp3 files that I can tote around on my phone or mp3 player.

I just took a look at Assimil's catalog, and they currently only offer Audio and MP3 CDs.

A while back I seem to remember seeing a pirated copy for the Norwegian course that was in CDROM/data format, though.

There are other programs listed under "e-Learning", but Norwegian isn't one of them.

They are not talking about the normal audio CDs, but the CD-ROM courses.

@Scratch,

Assimil courses on CD-ROM are different from the Book + CD/MP3 courses. Whereas all their CD/MP3 courses need is a CD drive and thus can run on virtually any computer, their CD-ROM courses only run on a compatible operating system - in this case a Windows computer up until Windows XP, but not Vista and not Windows 7. I hope this answers your question.

I have updated the first post to highlight this difference to avoid further confusion.

@hrhenry,

You are right about the Assimil homepage. However, take a look at this link. Apparently, one can still get Assimil CD-ROM courses on Amazon.co.uk:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3 Daps&field-keywords=assimil+cd-rom

@Cainntear,

Thanks.

@Tractor,

You got here first. Thanks.
