Didn't see a thread for those of us doing French for the current 6WC, so here it is!
What is everyone's plan of attack? I'm a total beginner and have begun with Assimil's Französisch ohne Mühe and Langenscheidt's Französisch in 30 Tagen. I also have "Komplettkurs Französisch" from Hueber, which I haven't looked at yet. Does anyone have experience with any of the FSI French courses? French intimidates me in a way that other Romance (and even Slavic) languages don't. Here's to hoping this will fade sometime during the challenge! 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I plan on using Assimil New French with Ease as my main material. I also have Pimsleur
from the library when I can get it. Also, French In Action. But, I think FIA is only available in the USA. I have a few other books to practice exercises. French.About.com has a lot of mini lessons for beginners. It's not my main language, but I intent to review my textbook, read books, listen to podcasts and audiobooks, and if I should feel very daring, use lang-8 to write in horrible French.

I'm studying French for the 6WC, with my son. We're using Fast French, and probably mix it up with DVD's of French in Action and Assimil French.
I live in the UK, but since I am visiting the USA, I ordered the FIA DVD's. I'm sure they are region 1, but my DVD player can handle it. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

My "official" 6WC language is German but I did French for the last one and will be continuing with it during this 6WC
as well. I've been focused on Japanese exclusively for a while so I'm going to review first by going back through Michel Thomas foundation and reviewing Assimil lessons (I got to 40-something last time), then continuing with Assimil, the MT advanced course, and FIA. I highly recommend the combination of MT, Assimil, and FIA, they greatly compliment each other. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Besides Michel Thomas, Pimsleur, FSI, and other courses already mentioned, I thought I'd point out the existence of a number of prebuilt Anki decks, namely
Tatoeba [French with native audio] is a deck of 1795 sentences, and if you follow the instructions in its description, it automatically downloads all the audio for these sentences from Tatoeba, giving a good deal of material that can be used to begin reading French (imho after MT). The deck is just small enough to fit into the 6WC and just big enough to be of use. and these two 5700 Common French Words Intermediate French are decent size decks full of common words for beginners to dive and get some decent vocab at the start (sadly no audio), probably not enough time in 6WC, but noone says you have to quit right after. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Oh yes, speaking of vocab, I forgot to mention that I have a copy of "A Thematic Approach to French Vocabulary"
which is built around theme-based vocab lists with some example sentences, and which I find to be excellent, so if you like that sort of thing I highly recommend it. I'll be using it once I get past my review period. 1 person has voted this message useful |
