Well, you're doing about as good after 4 months as I am after 1 year. But it brings up a question that's been nagging
me. I noticed that you stress the о in the что of потому́ что. And I had a tutor who did the same; she was doing it
in such a way to make me take notice. But in natural speech it always seems to decline, so that's the way I
pronounce it. It also declines in my text-to-speech program. So my question to the Russian natives is - does it
decline or not?

потому что can be pronounced as one word (что is unstressed) and as two separate words if
we want to say "that's why". Then что may take a weak stress.

Thanks! Could you give an example sentence of each?

Семь - нечётное число, потому что не делится на два.
Англия отказалась продолжать войну только потому, что не могла себе этого позволить.
Although что can be unstressed even in the second sentence.
Pay attention at the position of the comma.

I think you only have heard one meaning of изучать, namely to understand something through a scientific exploration of the topic, but that's by no means it's only meaning. It just as much means to learn by acquiring understanding or skills or even observing something with the purpose of understanding something.

In particular изучать is very common in the context of language learning in any contexts or settings, not just formal university study.

The prefix из-,ис- implies a certain degree of intensity, completeness, thoroughness, among other possible meanings. As such изучать may usually imply a greater degree of commitment, intensity or proficiency than учить.

As to what may be more appropriate, that depends very much on the kind of study being undertaken, the methods being used, the speaker's mood and what s/he wishes to emphasize about their approach or attitude towards the subject. So one could say изучаю, учу, исследую, учусь, штудирую, балуюсь, занимаюсь, etc.
