Schmidt was a prisoner at Nuremberg, as he was thought to be a lower-level war criminal by virtue of interpreting for Hitler, but he was later released. According to a book about the trials by Joseph Persico, he was drafted in to help with document translation, as they were falling badly behind with this massive work during the trial. A bit irregular, given Schmidt's status. According to Persico, Schmidt would take trial documents and quickly dictate the translation of them to a stenographer. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Simultaneous interpreting got its start at Nuremberg. I have no desire to get into the war on a language discussion list but the narrow details of how it all started are quite relevant.
