A bit irregular, given Schmidt's status. According to Persico, Schmidt would take trial documents and quickly dictate the translation of them to a stenographer.

Simultaneous interpreting got its start at Nuremberg. I have no desire to get into the war on a language discussion list but the narrow details of how it all started are quite relevant.

Anyway, the war helped trigger off a lot of subsequent events, like the space age. Space rockets are direct descendants of the German V-2 rocket.
