Seconding the Negra Modelo recommendation. So much better.

If you're insistent on looking like a dumb college undergrad on Spring Break, you should go all out and do a
"rugby shot" (so named by the rugby players at my school who would do it as a test of endurance).

1. Snort the salt
2. Down a double shot of tequila
3. Squeeze the lemon in your eye.
4. Howl in pain as you buddies laugh and wonder why the girls all think you're an idiot.

. . .

Yikes, that just sounds painful.......and stupid......

I guess that's why you don't see many Rhodes Scholar rugby players...

To my happy surprise, my knowledge of Mexican beer could be boosted hugely within hours here. Thanks. :-)

Well, since my question originated from a novel, I thought the author wanted to describe his hero as masculine as possible with the details of Dos equis, tequila, lime wedge, no glass, Mexican drinking stuff, etc. Now with all your honest testimony, the hero's image in my mind is degrading by seconds. Despite his wealth and supposely good tastes, he's a fake drinker.   Poor guy, and his creator the author.

To stay in the spirit of understanding language via culture, including dining and drinking habits and customs, and to address the motivation of the fellow in lanni's novel, in many telenovelas the upper class people seem to drink what appears to be whiskey/scotch, the "lower" class people drink tequila. Often when a character is a "bad guy" he will drink excessive amounts of tequila and become increasingly belligerent; sometimes a "good guy" drinks excessive amounts to reflect his depressed mood and downward spiral.
The Mexican slang for beer is "chela" which literally means "blond, light" as in color. Hence "vamos a tomar una chela" "let's go have a beer".
Lanni, if you want to try Mexican beverages, I would recommend sangría. The name derives from its appearance being similar to blood and implies "bleeding." I love Mexican food and have found that every authentic Mexican restaurant seems to have its own recipe and so the taste can vary. I also found that my ability to speak and socialize with the staff in theses restaurants increases in proportion to how much I enjoy their sangría.

EDIT re: Bud Lite. It is a sponsor of a telenovela "Donde está Elisa?" and there is blatant product placement with a character seen drinking this brand of beer-of course, since he is macho police detective, he drinks from the bottle. This also allows him to show the label to the audience.

I will try sangría, plus those recommended Mexican beers, if possible.

I watched a commercial video on net. A bearded guy said to have traveled a lot around the world, and Dos equis
was his most favorite beer.   I know it is just advertising, but if Dos equis and Corona do not taste nice, why
people drink them all the time?

I will admit, I am a craft brewer myself and a serious beer snob :-)   so I have tried most Mexican beers. If I had
to rank them, best to worst I would say:

TOP TIER (DO NOT put a lime or anything else in these!!)

Bohemia
Negra Modelo

MIDDLE TIER ( Not as good as the top tier but certainly drinkable. I personally wouldn't put a lime in them)

Modelo
Dos Equis Dark
Dos Equis Regular
Pacifico

BOTTOM TIER ( Flavorless, bland swill. Even if a lime marks you as a tourist it may help make these taste
better!!)

Corona
Corona Light
Tecate
Carta Blanca
Sol
Chihuahua

Get a few with some friends and have a blind tasting! Even the bad Mexican beers can taste good with Mexican
food. So make sure you serve them with Mexican food.

Also, if you are curious what others think of these beers go to

OK,   I have to admit....

I am currently in Mexico. Temps in the 100's (F) (40's C).   Cold Tecate is tasting really good.....really, really
good!!!   Still not putting lime in it though! :-)
