This is a little anecdote about food and language...two of my favourite things, especially in combination. When I was a young kid I used to boggle at the names of fancy food, and so I was delighted when my local café added "Croque Monsieurs et Croque Madames" to their menu, and immediately bought one for my girlfriend and I at the time. They sounded so exotic and French and full of promise, and she looked very impressed. That was, until we found out that they were just some cheese and ham toasties (I think they call these grilled cheese and ham sandwiches in the US too). Thinking about this today still makes me laugh!
When I looked this up again out of nostalgia on Wikipedia, I discovered that there is a whole world of variation on this simple dish, modeled on the original, but with slightly different ingredients and given names depending upon language or nationality. Here's what I found so far:
* croque provençal (with tomato)
* croque auvergnat (with bleu d'Auvergne cheese)
* croque gagnet (with gouda cheese and andouille sausage)
* croque norvégien (with smoked salmon instead of ham)
* croque tartiflette (with sliced potatoes and Reblochon cheese)
* croque bolognese (with Bolognese sauce)
* croque señor (with tomato salsa)
* croque Hawaiian (with a slice of pineapple)
* the "Croque McDo" sandwich at McDonald's locations in France
I wonder if anyone knows of other popular dishes with interesting linguistic culinary combinations? :P
